On March 25th, the Justice Department announced that it will refuse to defend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in Texas v. U.S., a lawsuit brought by a series of conservative states to completely repeal the landmark health care legislation—including protections for those with preexisting conditions, the Medicaid expansion, and the ability for young adults to remain on their parent’s plans until they turn 26.
“Since its inception, Republicans have waged a total war on the Affordable Care Act, and this latest decision by the Justice Department to continue a partisan political crusade over defending a landmark law is simply unconscionable—even for this morally bankrupt administration,” said Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. “The right to live a healthy life should never be an ideological fight—it is a matter of life and death.
“Republicans have few answers when it comes to improving our health care system, yet they remain hell-bent on taking coverage away from people. The Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the Affordable Care Act, and Congressional Democrats will continue to fight to protect the health coverage of the American people. Instead of allowing Republicans to attack the American foundations that provide care and dignity to the people of this country, such as the ACA, Medicare and Social Security, Democrats will work to protect what we have and continue expanding coverage and affordable health care for all Americans.”
Attorneys General for 21 states have filed an opening brief defending the Affordable Care Act.
